Reflexology
One of the questions I ask my clients when they first come. How do you really rest? And
the truth is. They often don’t. Today we just keep going. We often say ‘yes’ too much and ‘no’ not enough. Stress triggers our ‘fight and flight’ response. That survival mode where adrenaline and cortisol are released. A little stress to help manage specific situations can be helpful. Longer term chronic stress can actually make you feel unwell. Stress can be due to many things - work, home, family, finance. And how we experience it is very individual. Physically – headaches or dizziness; muscle tension; clenched jaw; stiff joints & muscles; stomach problems; increased heartbeat; palpitations; extreme tiredness. Mentally - difficulty with concentrating and decision making; busy mind; feelings of overwhelm; constant worrying; being forgetful. Behaviourally - feeling irritable or snappy; sleeping too much or not enough. The list could go on.
The opposite to stress (fight & flight), is rest (rest & digest). This is the part of our nervous system where we relax; where our heart rate slows, our breathing deepens, our muscles release, our tissues repair; our gut digests, our thinking and decision making becomes clearer; and our immune response and overall healing can happen.
How do you really rest and how are you activating your rest & digest?
