Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD)
What is the lymphatic system
The lymphatic system is vital in balancing fluid levels throughout the body. It is also involved in immune defence, the removal of waste products and the transportation of nutrients. The lymphatic system relies on movement and stimulation to help it move lymph around the body.
What is lymphoedema
Lymphoedema is a long term condition that normally causes swelling within tissues due to damage or failure of lymph drainage. People can be born with it genetically (primary) or it can be caused by trauma to the lymph system (secondary).
Reflexology lymph drainage
RLD is an award winning Reflexology technique which has been developed, researched and published by Sally Kay. Sally developed RLD through her practice when working in cancer care outpatient clinics with women who experienced breast cancer related lymphoedema (BCRL).The research Sally has done appears to support that RLD for BCRL may have a positive impact on both swelling and pain.
The RLD technique involves the gentle stimulation of the lymphatic reflexes on the feet to cause an effect on the lymphatic system of the body (in Reflexology theory these feet reflexes mirror the lymphatic system of the body). The treatment technique consists of several precise sequential steps that aim to cause an effect on the lymphatic system in the body. This Reflexology treatment is very different to a traditional Reflexology treatment. As it is gentle it has been found to be tolerated well by people with conditions where a normal Reflexology treatment may be too much. RLD is based on the methods of MLD lymphatic drainage massage. It may be used similarly to support clients. MLD may be useful with Arthritis, Eczema, Asthma, CFS/ME, Fibromyalgia , Migraines, Sinus Problems, Muscular Problems. RLD is non evasive, extremely relaxing and people are often surprised at how sleepy and relaxed it makes them feel.
I am excited to report I have trained with Sally Kay and I am an approved RLD practitioner.
